The meeting focused on the topics of illegal use of dynamite for fishing in the area of Cyclades and the need for measures to protect aquaculture and the restoration of fish stocks in the area.

Commissioner Damanaki shared the Greens' view for the promotion of effective measures towards the recovery of fisheries in Cyclades, namely for the creation of Marine Protected Areas.

Similar initiatives have already established several coastal fishermen compounds, in collaboration with the municipal and regional authorities of the area.

The Commissioner fully supports the proposal of MEP Chrysogelos, to set up a meeting with the Regional Council of South Aegean in Cyclades, to discuss this important issue, with the participation of local authorities, social partners and the technical help of the European Agencies to which they preside.
