BRAZIL - With the slogan "Fish: makes your mouth water and is good for health", the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has announced the start of Fish Week in 2012, which runs until the 17 September and aims to encourage the consumption of fish in the country.

This year, the campaign includes participation of Olympians and dissemination in social networks, as well as a session on recipes.

The campaign will be attended by Thiago Pereira, Olympic medalist in swimming. Gastronomic events and demonstrations will be promoted in the states and the Federal District.

The official launch, nationwide, was conducted by Minister Marcelo Crivella, Fisheries and Aquaculture, on 1 September, Market St Peter, in Niterói (RJ). The venue is a traditional point for those looking to buy fish and seafood.

On the website of the Ministry a brochure with tips for handling fish, plus guidelines on how to verify the quality of the product at the time of purchase, and various regional recipes can be found.

Fish Week has the support of supermarket chains, markets, public markets, bars and restaurants, schools and nutrition centers.

The week is part of the National Campaign to Promote Consumption of Fish, the integration of producers and other links of the supply chain through the preparatory meetings, reducing prices and organising activities with children.

Currently the average fish consumption in the Brazilian population is around 9kg/person/year. The recommended ammount by the World Health Organization is 12kg/habitante/ano.
