Mackerel Fishery Remains Open After Agreement with Portugal
18 September 2012SPAIN - The Spanish government has managed to keep open the mackerel fishery fleet operating bottom trawling in waters off Portugal after an agreement with the country.
By continuing ongoing negotiations with other Member State, the quota initially allocated to Spain for mackerel in ICES zone IXa (Southern Finistère, off Portugal and Gulf of Cadiz), has increased by an amount that is considered enough to keep the fishery open until the end of the year.
To do this, the fishing industry involved in this fishery should regulate itself so that the assigned quota is not exhausted meaning that the fishery will remain open for the rest of the year.
