Recently it was nominated to be considered for listing under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act). Any native Australian species can be nominated by a member of the public for listing.

A nomination is followed by a rigorous process of assessment which is underway for Blue Warehou at present.

There has been no decision on whether Blue Warehou should be listed under the EPBC Act or that it is under any threat of extinction.

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has a Rebuilding Strategy in place for Blue Warehoue.

No commercial fishery managed by AFMA has ever gone extinct or will in the foreseeable future.
