Agri-Pinoy Fish Mart Programme Distributes Equipment

09 October 2012

PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has distributed fish mart equipment and fish supplies to 11 municipalities in Abra under the Agri-Pinoy Fish Mart programme of the government.

BFAR Regional Director Lilibeth Signey distributed equipment composed of chest freezers, display racks, and weighing scales to the fishers and fish vendors of the towns that attended the orientation conference about the programme held earlier.

These participating municipalities are Bucay, Daguioman, Lacub, Luba, Malibcong, Tubo, PeƱarrubia, Sallapadan, San Isidro, San Juan, and Tineg. They paid for the fish items as their counterpart in the programme.

The fish products included marinated and smoked milkfish, oyster, mussels, and white prawns. There were also fermented fish and fish sauce in the package. These were delivered in blast freezers to the fishers and fish vendors in Bangued through the assistance of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG), in charge of the social mobilisation of the project beneficiaries in the province.

The Agri-Pinoy Fish Mart programme aims to connect the fish producers in the lowlands to the Cordillera market to have an adequate and safe supply of saltwater fish or marine products at reasonable price with the end goal of decreasing the incidence of malnutrition and consequently alleviate poverty in Abra and in the region.

Meantime, Abra through the OPAG, has a continuing programme for the sustained fishery activities in the province to provide alternative livelihood to the farmers especially those who have lost their farmlands in the recent typhoons that hit the province.
