AUSTRALIA - The opening prices for the South Australia southern rock lobster season are down on previous years.

Fishermen from Robe have reported prices between $55 and $58 a kilogram for medium size fish, while those down the coast are receiving $53 for the smaller size, reports ABCRural.

Rock lobster exporter Andrew Lawrie told ABCRural prices are down about $15 a kilo, but that was expected.

"We expected the price to be back this year because of the ongoing problem we've had with the Chinese borders and the payment of the luxury tax, and consequently the risk that's been taken overseas by the importers just means that they're not prepared to pay as much as they would have last year when there wasn't as much risk involved in the importation of the fish."
