12 October 2012

SPAIN - The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has issued the Decree which grants temporary cessation to the fleets operating routinely in the Mauritanian fishing ground, which are now unable to continue fishing in these waters due to the reduction in fishing opportunities through the European Union and Mauritania agreement.

Aid is granted for a period of six months of temporary cessation conducted from 1 August 2012 to 31 January 2013 inclusive. The Ministry may extend aid for a period of six months to complete a shutdown period of twelve months.

The total amount allocated for the funding of these grants has been raised to a higher amount of €6.6 million.

A total of 37 owners of 16 shellfish trawlers and 21 cephalopod trawlers with ports in the regions of Andalusia, Canary Islands, Galicia and autonomous city of Ceuta are affected.
