Spain Joins France, Poland, Portugal for Fishing Fleet Support24 October 2012
SPAIN - The Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, has indicated that Spain has closed a partnership with countries such as France, Poland and Portugal, who also agree the high importance of maintaining cessation aid to fleets.
Mr Arias Cañete said this after the first debate on the compromise proposal of the future of the European Maritime and Fisheries, held in Luxembourg under the Cypriot Presidency of the European Union.
In this debate, the Spanish proposal focused on the inclusion of measures to support the suspension of fleets, both temporary and permanent, as well as measures for its modernisation.
Mr Arias Cañete indicated that the maintainance of aid for temporary cessation has been proposed as it is very important within the management plans, especially for Spain, when international agreements are not effective or there are problems, such as the agreements with Morocco and Mauritania.
At the same time, "we are defending the outermost regions," said Mr Arias Cañete, who hopes to see a substantial increase in the levels of support to these areas.
