2013 TAC set for Northeast Arctic Saithe Fishery

Sustainability Politics +2 more

NORWAY - The Fisheries and Coastal Affairs department has set the total fishing quota for the Northeast Arctic saithe at 140,000 tonnes in 2013. This is a decrease of 24,000 tonnes (14.6 per cent) from 2012.

Despite the catch of saithe north of 62N being lower than the total quota in recent years, there is still a decline in spawning stock.

The management of saithe is based on a strategy that the International Council for marine research (ICES) in 2007 rated to be in line with the precautionary principle.

Within the established management strategy and advice from ICES, the quota could have been higher, but the Marine Institute has pointed out that the fisheries data that goes into the calculation may have led to an overestimation of the population size.

The ministry has therefore taken into account the uncertainty.
