12 November 2012

EU - Pig meat products, goat meat, sheep meat and scallops are among products from across Europe that have been given EU protection.

The European Commission added six denominations of agricultural and food products to the list of protected denominations of origin (PDOs) and protected geographical indications (PGIs).

From Portugal, goat meat from the Serpentina breed, " Cabrito do Alentejo " has been given a PGI status as well as sheep meat of the Churra Galega Mirandesa breed, " Cordeiro Mirandês/Canhono Mirandês ", which has received a PDO status.

From the UK, queen scallops from Isle of Man waters, " Isle of Man Queenies " have a PDO status and Slovenia's " Kraška panceta " is given PGI status. It is a traditional dried pork meat product.

Germany's asparagus from the Abensberg region, " Abensberger Spargel/Abensberger Qualitätsspargel " and Italy's, cherries "Ciliegia di Vignola " get PGI status.

These denominations have been added to the list of more than 1,000 products already protected by the legislation on protection of geographical indications, denominations of origin and traditional specialties.
