PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources on Friday launched the experimental culture of white shrimps (Penaeus vannamei), paving the way for its commercial importation and distribution in the country.Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., who led the activity, said the introduction of vannamei (Pacific white shrimp) in the Philippines offers choices to farmers on what species to culture--the white shrimps or the black tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon or sugpo).
BFAR Director Malcolm Sarmiento said De Venecia encouraged BFAR "to make the bold move to try and experiment the culture of vannamei in the country."
"Vannamei is the hope to revive the almost dead shrimp industry and make shrimps available to ordinary people," Sarmiento said.
He said while great progress has been made in the culture of tilapia, seaweed and bangus (milkfish), the growth of the shrimp industry has remained stagnant.
