Governemt Grants P115 Million for Agri-fishery Projects22 November 2012
PHILIPPINES - To further boost the development of the agricultural and fishery sector, and increase the productivity and incomes of small farmers and fisherfolk in Misamis Occidental, the Department of Agriculture recently granted the province and its respective local government units P115-million worth of agri-fishery inputs, equipment and facilities, including farm-to-market road (FMR) projects.
Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala personally handed over the certificates of assistance to Misamis Occidental Governor Herminia M. Ramiro, on 14 November 2012, during the 3rd Pas’Ungko S’g festival to mark the province’s 83rd foundation anniversary.
The amount included P70-million worth of FMRs, and a hanging bridge funded by the DA’s Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) and DA-Office of the Secretary (OSEC). Another P35M was allotted for the provincial government, and P32M for the municipalities of Panaon (P18.8M) and Tudela (P13.5M) for the rehabilitation and construction of FMRs.
Farm inputs and equipment worth P8M were granted under the DA’s Agri-Pinoy rice program, as well as two corn mills (P300,000 each) under the DA national corn program.
The DA’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) also provided a multi-species fish hatchery (P10M) for the town of Sapang Dalaga, and P2.6-M worth of fishery inputs, equipment and projects to fisherfolk groups in other coastal towns.
The DA’s Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) will also construct small farm reservoirs worth P2.1M.
During a forum attended by 1,000 farmers, fisherfolk, and local government officials, Secretary Alcala raffled-off P1.1-million worth of farm equipment (hand tractor, rice thresher, collapsible dryers, backback sprayers), 300 bags of certified rice seeds and Open-polliinated variety corn seeds, 700 of pouches vegetable seeds, five head each of carabao and cattle, and 25 head of goats (5 bucks and 20 does).
