Maltese Fishermen Disappointed With No Bluefin Tuna Quota Rise

23 November 2012

MALTA - Maltese fishermen have expressed their disappointment that the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) decided against a substantial increase to the bluefin tuna quota for 2013.

After recent stock data showed the stock is improving, fishermen expected to see a rise in the quota, reports TimesofMalta.

Many fishermen stated that the decision of increasing the quota by roughly 500 tons is unfair.

“Following the positive scientific evidence showing tuna is recovering very rapidly, we were expecting the global quota to increase at least to 16,000 tons. This 500-ton increase will mean a mere five tons more for Maltese fishermen next year and this is not fair for our industry,” Mr Bugeja, told TheTimesofMalta.
