Government Happy with Slight Increase to Bluefin Tuna Quota

23 November 2012

SPAIN - The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment is satified that Spain has achieved a 100 ton increase to its bluefin tuna quota following the recent meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) to decide on bluefin tuna management in 2013.

The Secretary General of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Carlos Dominguez, said the quota increase places the bluefin tuna quota for the Spanish fleet at over 2500 tons.

The overall quota was only raised slightly due to uncertainties in the level of recovery of the stock.

Spain also supports the overall measures taken to improve the control of fishing for bluefin tuna in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean
