Minister Promotes Fish at 'Fish Week'

10 December 2012

SPAIN - The Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, is opening 'Fish Week' today, 10 December, an initiative to encourage the consumption of fish among children and young people because of its importance in the formation of a healthy balanced diet.

With this initiative, the Ministry hopes to help combat childhood obesity. Currently, in Spain 23.5 per cent of children between three and five years are obese or overweight, which can cause problems such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease in adulthood.

The promotional activities will take place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, in various local markets and Mercamadrid. In addition, the Ministry is going to promote to 20,000 schoolchildren in 10 Spanish provinces.

Among the activities planned is a training exhibition at Skylight Patio Ministry, for 500 primary school students of the Community of Madrid. This will show the characteristics of the Spanish fishing sector, through scale models of boats and fishing gear and how they are used.

Young people will also be taught about aquaculture and its products, responsible consumption of fishery products, as well as the difference between the various fishery products that can be consumed, and the conditions of storage and fish processing.

To do this, the exhibition is divided into four thematic areas: "The corner of boats and fishing gear," where visitors can learn the tools needed for fishing; "The corner of aquaculture", which will house an aquarium with fry, "The corner of the fish", including a real representation of a fish, with the most representative fish in our diet, and "fish food corner", which will have a kitchen where the nutritional benefits of different fish will be explained.

In the afternoon, the exhibit is open to all citizens.
