Australia’s First Salmon Company Lands BAP Certification18 December 2012
AUSTRALIA - The Global Aquaculture Alliance has applauded Tassal Group Ltd. for becoming Australia’s first salmon-farming company to attain Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification.
Tassal is Australia’s largest Atlantic salmon producer and marketer, operating hatcheries, farm sites and processing plants on Tasmania. Established in 1986, the company has been listed on the Australian Securities Exchange since 2003. Tassal produces fresh and frozen salmon fillets, smoked salmon and canned salmon for the wholesale and retail markets, with Woolworths and Coles supermarkets among its customers.
Linda Sams, Tassal’s chief sustainability officer, emphasized the importance of earning BAP certification. “It is another example of what we are doing to externally certify our products to best-practice measurement,” she said. “Through this third-party audit process, it confirms that we are doing what we say, which is important for our customers.”
Added BAP Vice President of Development Peter Redmond, “We applaud the actions taken by Tassal and welcome it to the growing number of retailers and suppliers sourcing and supplying BAP product for their consumers in the Australian marketplace.”
Tassal has picked up numerous awards and recognitions over the years. Just this month, Tassal was named a Tasmanian Employer of Choice for 2012, honored alongside 13 other Tasmanian businesses and organizations by Minister for Economic Development David O’Byrne. (The company has more than 700 employees.) And, last year, Tassal won the inaugural Australian Aquaculture Award, in the aquaculture production category.
