Sustainable Shrimp Provisions Implemented in Ecuador

ECUADOR - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP) has established a ban on shrimp (prawn) fishing for the artisanal fishing fleet, from 16 December 2012 until 16 January 2013.

The industrial fishing fleet will be banned from December 16 to February 16, 2013, by Ministerial Agreement 065.

Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Guillermo Moran, said the closure is performed during periods of spawning shrimp resource.

He explained the need to reduce fishing effort from both the industrial fishing fleet and artisanal fishing fleet.

It also prohibits the fishing of bioaquatic shrimp through the art of industrial trawling from December 16, 2012.

The Director of Fisheries Control of the Undersecretary of Fisheries, Molke Mendoza said processing companies, packers marine that have been processed before the export ban and wishing, may apply to the Directorate of Control for proper authorisation, provided they notify their stock before the start of the closure.

Owners of fishing vessels and processing companies that do not comply with the provisions of this agreement shall be punished in accordance with law.
