Ministry Extends Aid to Fishermen Hit by Guinea Bissau Fishing Closure

04 January 2013

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has released aid to fishermen affected by the recommendation of the EU not to fish in Guinea Bissau waters.

This initiative has been taken due to the inability to fish in these waters, following the recommendation by the European Commission that no vessel operates in the EEZ of Guinea Bissau, failing to ensure the safety of ships at the situation policy of that country.

Under current order, the aid is granted for a period of six months of temporary cessation, beginning on December 16, 2012 until June 15, 2013, inclusive.

The total amount allocated for the financing of this aid is €1,200,000. €200,000 is expandable to a maximum of 10 vessels belonging to the modalities of shellfish and cephalopod trawlers. Currently, there are eight vessels belonging to the fleet of shellfish trawlers.
