Young’s Welcomes Fish Fight’s Impact on Dynamite and Discards15 February 2013
UK - Young’s Seafood Limited welcomes the scrutiny that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s latest Fish Fight TV show, has brought to the unacceptable use of dynamite in fishing. The specialist fish company, which supplies a wide range of branded and retailer branded seafood, also welcomes the prominence that Fish Fight has given to the practice of discarding fish at sea.
David Parker, Young’s Seafood Limited’s Marine Biologist, said: “Fish Fight has done a good job in highlighting unacceptable instances where dynamite is used at sea. Dynamite is a fishing method that is prohibited by Young’s Seafood Limited, as part of our Fish for Life programme on protecting our seas and supplying responsibly sourced fish. Dangerous for fishermen and damaging to fisheries and reefs, the use of dynamite is a practice that we strongly oppose.”
Mike Mitchell, the CSR Director at Young’s Seafood Limited, added: “Over the years Fish Fight has helped to bring additional attention to the issue of discards and the process of reform is now truly moving forwards.
"Everyone wants to know that the fish on their plate has been sourced responsibly, and that food hasn’t gone to waste, and that’s why we have campaigned for a number of years on discards. If we are going to ensure that future generations can enjoy fish at least two times a week, in line with Government guidelines, then it is crucial that this issue is tackled in a way that is sustainable for the long-term.”
