Government Promotes Sustainable Fishing of Gulf Weakfish

Sustainability +1 more

MEXICO - Based on research conducted by specialists from the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA), the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), Enrique Martinez y Martinez, has set a catch quota for Gulf weakfish (Cynoscion othonopterus) in the federal waters of the Upper Gulf of California and Delta Colorado, which will maintain abundance levels, promote sustainable fisheries and allow for better utilisation of this species.

The quota for this fishing season is 2,700 tons gutted weight and prohibits the landing of swish (swim bladders of fish-body that helps you stay in different depths of the sea) with the body of the croaker.

According to the technical opinion issued by the INAPESCA, after reaching the specified total quota, fishing activities may be suspended to allow the remaining biomass to recover.

As part of the research, the National Fisheries Institute conducted biological sampling campaigns and compiled a database on its capture.

Gulf weakfish is a kind of high value fish in the Biosphere Reserve Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta and is used by fishermen in the Gulf of Santa Clara, Sonora and San Felipe and fisheries organizations of the Lower Colorado River.

Sustainable fishing of the species generates jobs for the benefit of communities.
