Minister Upholds Protection of Fleet in the Gulf of Cadiz

22 March 2013

SPAIN - The Secretary General of Fisheries, Carlos Dominguez Diaz, has discussed the latest developments regarding the Spanish fisheries in the waters of the Bay of Algeciras and on the status of the ship "Divine Providence", with the Gulf of Cadiz sector, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Junta de AndalucĂa and the mayors of Algeciras and Linea de la Concepcion.

Carlos Dominguez has found the common position of all concerned authorities and noted "the need to continue in the same line of action that the Central Government has been doing since last year: that is, protection and coverage for the Spanish fleet fishing in the Bay of Algeciras, calling for the retention of the normal activity of fishing in these waters."

In this sense, Mr Dominguez stated the Secretary General of Fisheries will defend fishermen against the Instituto Social de la Marina, which still wants to collect taxes, despite fishermen being unable to fish.

Moreover, regarding the case of the ship "Divine Providence", pending trial in the coming days in Gibraltar, the Secretary General of Fisheries has provided a certificate to the Fishermen's Association Line to assist in the defense of the owner of the said vessel, in the sense of finding that the activity of the vessel on the day of the alleged infringement was in full compliance with Spanish law and the European Union.
