SPAIN - The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, through the General Secretariat of Fisheries, will reopen again the mackerel fishery for trawlers of Northwestern Cantabrian. The fishery was closed as a precaution on the 29 March, after the fishing season started on 25 February.

The reopening was made after analysing consumption data from various sources such as sales notes and landing declarations to the various units involved in the fishery, adopting the following management measures in accordance with the agreements reached at the meetings Working Group-Northwestern Cantabrian last February.

For ships who have exceeded their quota in individual deals, the Ministry confirms the closure of the fishery decreed on 29 March.

For units that have yet to share or less than 7.5 TM daily limit, only incidentally caught mackerel landed to exhaustion of the quota, or until 15 April, whichever occurs first, will be allowed.

This precautionary management approach is performed in compliance with the policy objectives of this Ministry to avoid exceeding the quota of any stock, and redoubling the effort in this particular species, to prevent recurrence of situations that result in severe penalties, such as those imposed by overfishing in 2009 and 2010.
