Fishing Rights Extended Around Takeshima

JAPAN - Fishing rights in the waters around the Sea of Japan islets of Takeshima have been extended by a further 10 years for local fishermen.

The Shimane Prefectural Government has decided to extend the rights for the sixth time and this most recent extension is until the end of August 2023, reports TheJapanTimes.

The islets are held by South Korea but claimed by Japan.

“We decided to extend the rights further so that fishing can be resumed as soon as the territorial dispute is resolved,” an official in the prefectural government’s fisheries division told the newspaper.
