Seafish Screens New Film: ‘The Business of Fishing’

14 May 2013

UK - The screening of a new film from Seafish, which explores the challenges and rewards faced by fishing vessel owners operating in the UK is being shown in Devon and Dorset this week.

'The Business of Fishing' was shown at the South Devon College in Paignton, Devon on Monday 13 May and will be shown at the Crab House Café, Wyke Regis, Dorset at 6.30pm on Tuesday 14 May.

The film features four vessel owners and explores the complexities of operating in the modern fishing industry.

The concept of the film was based on an initial idea to help improve understanding among environmental NGOs and policy makers about the business aspects of fishing and both the day to day and the strategic challenges that vessel owners face.

Hazel Curtis, Chief Economist at Seafish said: "This film allows the audience to view the industry through the eyes of four individual vessel owners who come from different fishing sectors and regions of the UK. The film gives a fascinating perspective on their experiences of running a business in our fishing industry and the fishermen who took part in the film have welcomed the opportunity to tell their stories.

"We hope that 'The Business of Fishing' will help environmental NGOs, policy-makers and other interested parties have a greater understanding of the business aspects of fishing. Despite the substantial challenges facing fishing boat owners, the overall message of the film is a positive one; all the vessel owners involved remain optimistic the future of fishing in the UK and recognise the importance of managing our stocks well."
