Eastern Fishing Community Pledge to Repulse Anti-government Elements

SRI LANKA - Members of fisheries committees in Sri Lanka's eastern coast of the Jaffna Peninsula pledged to repulse anti government elements operating in their areas with narrow political motives and to work together with the Army sanctioning the government’s ongoing development projects in their area.

They gave this assurance attending a meeting with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 55 Division Brigadier Ajith Wijesinghe recently at the Headquarters 55 Division, Kaddaikadu. GOC submitted a detailed presentation on welfare programmes that have been launched by the Army for the betterment of civilians and the government effort taken to develop infrastructure and livelihood, especially of newly resettled people.

Fisheries committee members who were present at the meeting representing societies from Nagar Kovil to Chundikulam assured their support to the Army to continue with its humanitarian support to the fishing community. Majority of people living in 55 Division areas make their living through fishing. Brig. Wijesinghe discussed the problems faced by local fishing families with them and assured that Army would give any assistance to make their livelihood secure and life comfortable.

Senior Army officers serving under the 55 Division and members of fisheries societies of Thalaiady, Vathirayan, Uduththurai, Maruthankerny, Aliyavalai, Veththilaikerny, Champianpattu and Kaddaikadu were present at the meeting.
