IMARES and LEI, both part of Wageningen UR, will provide technical and economic knowledge and market intelligence.

The platform will deal with attracting private sector investment into aquaculture, and will further determine the role of the Ethiopian government, knowledge institutes in Ethiopia, The Netherlands and elsewhere, and of other chain actors in support of aquaculture development in Ethiopia.

Demand for fish in Ethiopia is rising. Despite the fact that much land and water is suitable for aquaculture in earthen ponds and cages, fish farming is currently unable to meet this demand.

This offers opportunities for both Ethiopian and Dutch aquaculture businesses to play a role in meeting this demand and improving food and nutrition security.

Construction of a number of commercial fish farms with support from government, industry and knowledge institutes is crucial for the development of aquaculture in Ethiopia. Private support can serve to kick start the development of the whole aquaculture business in Ethiopia. Dutch companies and knowledge institutes can help by supplying products, technology, knowledge and investment.
