Government Conducts Training on Fish Cage Construction, Tilapia Farming

06 June 2013

PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) recently conducted a five-day training course on fish cage construction and tilapia farming to 30 retiring enlisted personnel of 7th Infantry Division (7ID).

Wilfredo Cruz of BFAR lectured on the benefits of fishery, basic fisheries, proper fish handling and medical treatment.

Actual fishnet weaving and floating bamboo fish cage making were made by the participants as practical exercises at Pahingahan Dam inside 7ID’s headquarters in Fort Magsaysay where tilapia will be propagated as part of the joint project initiated by the Department of National Defense and Department of Agriculture.

“To help prepare our retiring soldiers, we initiated this kind of endeavor to teach them and enhance their livelihood specially when they are already out of the service,” 7ID Commander Major General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr said in a statement.

“Through this livelihood program, we are not only helping our retiring soldiers uplift their way of life but also contribute to food security in the province of Nueva Ecija as well. We are fighting a new kind of war, War on Poverty, and food security is one way in helping our government and our constituents in facing this new kind of war,” Catapang added.
