Spain Offers Sustainable Guarantee

08 July 2013

Spain - The Secretary General of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Carlos Dominguez, has offered his guarantee that fish offered to the Spanish consumer has been caught legally sustainable.

He explained that this Royal Decree would regulate fish products at the time of the first sale and will provide rules for some aspects which were not included under any other regulation.

Carlos Dominguez pointed out that the included traceability guidelines "are an attempt made by the Administration to make it easier to fulfil requirements for traceability of fish and aquaculture products along the whole production chain."

He further stressed: "All fish products caught in accordance with current regulations may be purchased by the consumer with full guarantees on its sustainability."

He continued: "Spain has extensive experience in promoting responsible fish consumption through successful campaigns."

In addition, the Secretary General has cautioned outside interests that seek to confuse the general public, by means of recommeding them to avoid certain fish products. These recommendations usually contain little or no scientific evidence and are produced to benefit outside interests and not the health of the general public.
