Women Trained to Create Value-added Fish Products

ECUADOR - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP), is training women in the cove of San Mateo, Manta Canton, to create value-added fish products.

This action is part of the implementation of the pilot plant for new products to be built at the beginning of this year, in the Artisan Fishing Port, under an agreement signed between the Government of Japan and Ecuador.

Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Guillermo Moran, said women, who are wives of artisanal fishermen, originally from San Mateo, can give added value to other fishery products such as shrimp, bonito, hake and squid, among others.

Ludmila Macias Zambrano, Bureau of Policy and Planning, said the project involves training a group of 40 people on good manufacturing practices and value added.

Belkys Delgado, president of the Artisanal Fisheries Production Cooperative "Ladies of San Mateo", thanked the management of the Government. He said that through entrepreneurship training and micro-enterprise this will generate new revenue and boost the local economy
