Red and Blue Crab Fishery Ban Comes into Force

16 August 2013

ECUADOR - For the proper management of the crab resource, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP), has banned the capture, transport and marketing of red (Ucides occidentalis) and blue (Cardisoma crassum) crabs from 15 August to 15 September.

The ban is to allow for the process of growth and is intended to protect the species during this time.

It is also to protect human health as, during this stage of growth, high concentrations of calcium oxalate are generated.

The Director of Fisheries Management, Molke Mendoza recalled that 75 inspectors will monitor and control fishing. Those who violate the rule will be punished, according to the determinations of the Fisheries Act and Fisheries Development.
