The course will be held on 21 and 22 of September 2013 in collaboration with Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and the New South Wales Aquaculture Association.
DPI Manager Aquaculture, Ian Lyall, said the course will cover a range of topics which are helpful to anyone wanting to set up a commercial or backyard system.
“A key focus will be on the financial viability and production capacity of tank based aquaculture systems and we are extremely fortunate to have international experts conducting the workshop including Dr Tom Losordo from Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems and Dr Wilson Lennard from Aquaponic Solutions,” Mr Lyall said.
“Dr Tom Losordo is an expert in the area of aquaculture engineering and recirculating aquaculture production systems and has a history of working with Port Stephens Fisheries Institute and has been running short courses in Australia for almost 15 years.
“Dr Wilson Lennard has scientific and engineering skills and experience in freshwater aquaculture, marine aquaculture and hydroponics.”
President of the NSW Aquaculture Association, Paul Van der Werf said the development of aquaculture is extremely important for NSW.
“There is an increasing demand for high quality seafood in NSW and aquaculture operations can help provide jobs and drive economic growth in regional areas and support the future food security needs,” Mr Van der Werf said.
Delegates will be attending from across NSW and from as far as New Zealand.
Some of the workshop topics covered include:
• Fish production – Stocking, feeding, harvesting and water quality.
• Plant production – Seedling production, disease and insect control.
• Economics and marketing – Aquaponics economics, marketing fish and plants.
• System design and management – Aeration, plumbing and construction.
The course will be held at the Soldiers Point Bowls Club, Soldiers Point.
