Strategic Plan Underway for Development of Spain's Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector

SPAIN - The Secretariat General of Fisheries, has conducted a Strategic Plan for Innovation and Technological development for the field of Fisheries and Aquaculture from 2013 to 2020.

The plan incorporates the priorities in innovation and technological development of capture fisheries and aquaculture, including the processing and marketing of their products.

Currently, the priorities and objectives of the plan are in a period of consultation with the fishing industry, for which three meetings are planned.

The first will be held on September 25, and will involve entities aquaculture production sector representatives attending the XIV National Congress of Aquaculture held in Gijón. The second meeting, which will take place on September 27 at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of Fisheries, will be for the extractive fishing sector and the third meeting will take place on October 2 , as part of the Fair Conxemar in Vigo and will discuss the processing and marketing sector of fishery products and aquaculture.

The plan will be a reference document on the priorities and strategic objectives at the state level that need to be reached in terms of innovation and technological development in fisheries and aquaculture for the period 2013-2020. It will also set guidelines that will guide public policy in this area, identifying the main lines of action to take to achieve the objectives.

The main objective of this plan is to increase competitiveness and ensure leadership in Spanish fisheries and aquaculture.

Once developed, this Strategic Plan will be presented on November 7 as part of the celebration of the III Congress of Fishery Product Quality, organized by the General Secretariat of Fisheries and that this call will focus on innovation in fishing and aquaculture.
