"Water preservation is a major concern for us who work in agriculture. We depend on our water resources primarily to produce crops and feed the population. It is essential we discuss this issue globally," said Mr Andrade.

The issue of water use in agricultural production was widely discussed by ministers at the meeting and recommendations were issued to ensure that agriculture has sufficient water resources to produce the food, fiber and energy necessary for mankind.

The event brought together ministers of agriculture from 33 countries.
