New Cold Storage Facility to Benefit Fishermen in Maconacon04 October 2013
PHILIPPINES - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic resources (BFAR) Central Office has assured the establishment of a fish port and a cold storage facility worth Php 20 million in the coastal town of Maconacon, Isabela.
BFAR national director Atty. Asis G. Perez, during the launching of the Cagayan Leg of the National Fisherfolk registration (FishR) programme, said Region 2 has a very rich fishing grounds and vast resources considering the stretch of its shoreline from Dinapigue in Isabela to Batanes province.
"The problem in coastal areas where fish production are abundant is the lack of facilities for proper storage and also the means to transport the it," Director Perez said.
Mr Asis in his constant visit to coastal areas of the country has seen the needs of fisherfolks and immediately come up with projects to address their plights.
He challenged the officials and staff of BFAR region 02 headed by Dir. Jovita P. Ayson to continue working for the management of the fisheries resources of the region.
Mr Asis added that one reason why many Taiwanese and foreign poachers come to fish in region 02 is because of its rich resources like high grade tuna and other high value species.
In May this year, BFAR 2 has conducted series of trainings in fishing gear construction and management, establishment of payao, fishing gear and fingerling distribution and fish processing and value adding to fisherfolks.
