Spain Requests Increase in Blufin Tuna Quota21 October 2013
SPAIN - The Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, has asked the European Commission to consider a reasonable increase in Spain's bluefin tuna quotas for 2014, in the light of the latest scientific studies.
According to the minister, new reports show a strong recovery of the stock.
Miguel Arias Cañete was speaking in Luxembourg, at the start of the Council of Fisheries Ministers of the European Union, which discussed the fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2014 and preparations for the annual meeting of the International Committee for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).
For Baltic quotas, and in view of scientific reports which show a satisfactory situation and biomass stocks, Mr Arias Cañete explained that "we must make the most of the possibilities offered by the scientists."
