What Does EU Membership Mean for the UK Fishing Industry?

28 October 2013

UK - People with knowledge of the EU, farming, fishing or energy have been invited to share their views on how the EU has affected the UK national interest.

These calls for evidence are part of the Government’s Balance of Competences Review, an analysis of what EU membership means for the UK. The review is examining the scope of EU powers and the effects they have on the UK.

The Fisheries review will examine EU powers for the Common Fisheries Policy, the management of fisheries and the farming of fish and shellfish.

The energy review will also include a number of areas relevant to the work of the MMO such as energy infrastructure development, renewables, carbon capture and storage and nuclear.

The calls for evidence will run for twelve weeks, from 21 October 2013 to 13 January 2014 for fisheries and 24 October 2013 to 15 January 2014 for energy.

The final reports will be published in summer 2014.

The Balance of Competences Review is broken down into a series of reports on specific areas of EU competence, spread over four semesters between autumn 2012 and autumn 2014. The term ‘competence’ is used to describe the powers, conferred on the EU by the Member States, to undertake specific actions.
