Mexico Establishes Fisheries Management Measures

MEXICO - The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) has established measures for the reorganization of fishing activity in 39 water bodies located in 17 states of the country, in order to improve the use and conservation of 87 species and maintain jobs and food, for the benefit of fishermen and consumers.

According to the Project 'Responsible fisheries in inland freshwater bodies of federal jurisdiction, for the utilization of fisheries resources', published in the Official Journal of the Federation ( DOF) provides that the authorization for the commercial fishery resources in inland water bodies will be subject to availability and species conservation.

The document also details what gear type that may be used and their specifications.

It also states that the use of drag and sandpipers seines, harpoons or spears, use of explosives or other techniques that impact negatively on species by affecting their biological activities or areas of refuge are not allowed.

The product of fishing must be landed in the authorized area and recognized by the relevant fisheries office.
