Increasing Profitable Processing of Groundfish

Sustainability Processing Economics +4 more

NORWAY - Nofima, on behalf of the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO), has produced a report that provides some answers on what is needed to achieve profitable processing of the whitefish industry in Norway.

LO has long been concerned about the groundfish industry in Norway.

The report suggests specific measures, but recommends LO to consider making policy changes in several areas:

· Mute the pressure in the Norwegian economy

· Create greater flexibility in the industry and trawlers' rights and obligations

· Set the regulations for the coastal fleet under debate

· Avoid fast quota changes

· Modernize fisheries policy with emphasis on a long-term supply chain perspective

LO wants to strengthen the groundfish industry position, and asked Nofima to present facts about the structure, employment and profitability, as well as reviews of key public policy instruments.

Scientists at Nofima have done this through a lecture series that has contributed to a broad academic foundation.
