UK - The Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG) has won a prestigious Food Manufacturing Excellence Award in recognition of its innovation and investment that has resulted in market expansion and the development of exciting new seafood products.

SSMG scooped the top prize in the Meat, Poultry & Seafood Manufacturing Company of the Year category at a glittering ceremony last night (21 November) at the Park Lane Hilton in London.

The judging panel was impressed by SSMG’s major investment in a new state-of-the-art seafood processing facility in central Scotland, which in turn has resulted in the development of a number of innovative new shellfish ready meal dishes.

These include Scottish Mussels in Green Thai Sauce, Scottish Mussels with Lime, Chilli and Coriander Butter Sauce, and Mussels with Clams in a Tomato and Chorizo Sauce.

Stephen Cameron, managing director of SSMG, said: “We are delighted to have won this illustrious award, which provides direct recognition of the fantastic efforts of our employees in ensuring the production of the very best in Scottish seafood.

“We are committed to further developing the shellfish category and are proud of the close partnerships we have forged with our customers. We strongly believe that quality shellfish harvested from Scottish waters holds tremendous potential for the future development of a vast array of new and exciting value-added products.”

SSMG is a co-operative of mussel and oyster farmers located on the West coast of Scotland and Shetland. SSMG represents about 75 per cent of total Scottish mussel production and supplies most of the major UK multiple retailers as well as food service sector with high quality live and value-added shellfish. The company also has a growing export business.

The Food Manufacturing Awards recognise the very best food and drink manufacturing companies that have displayed progress and achievement through their manufacturing processes in a highly competitive and fast moving business sector.
