Ecuador to Host Regional Fisheries Management Meeting

ECUADOR - Ecuador will host the Second Meeting of the Regional Fisheries Management Organisation South Pacific (SPRFMO). It will be held in Manta, the Howard Johnson Hotel, 27 to 31 January 2014.

In February this year, Ecuador participated in the First Meeting of the Regional Fisheries Organisation in the South Pacific, New Zealand, where he expressed his willingness to cooperate in the management of information mackerel fishery and other species, in the context of food security.

Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Guillermo Moran Velasquez, announced that the country is preparing to welcome the members of the Regional Committee of Fisheries, the eastern part of the South Pacific, which brings to Chile, Peru, Colombia, Australia, Bryonia Zealand among other countries.

He said the meeting will serve to reaffirm, based on international rights, commitments obtained on the responsible management of fisheries for mackerel and giant squid.

Among the topics to be addressed are: development of a vessel monitoring plan; register of vessels authorised to fish in the Convention Area; conservation and management, among others.

The Government, through the MAGAP, Foreign Ministry, Ministry of the Sea and other public institutions coordinate actions for the event to achieve the goals outlined in the agenda of the Second Convention.

The Regional Fisheries Management Organisation in the South Pacific, is an intergovernmental organisation that is committed to the conservation and sustainable use of fishery resources in the South Pacific Ocean and to safeguard the marine ecosystems in which these resources.
