Venezuelan Octopus Ban Comes into Force

09 January 2014

VENEZUELA - From the 1 January to 30 June, 2014, a ban on fishing for octopus is in place.

The objective of this measure is to ensure that the species can retain their reproductive cycles while maintaining sustainable levels in artisanal fisheries.

In addition, steps have been taken to make sure capture is regulated. First, octopus fishing is exclusive to artisanal maritime workers.

The fish caught must not weigh less than 400 grams and the producer must report to Insopesca monthly.

It is a priority of the Bolivarian Government to keep fishing within sustainable levels.
