Netukulimk Fisheries Receives $15,342 to Pursue Vessel Efficiency20 January 2014
CANADA - Netukulimk Fisheries Limited, a Connaigre Peninsula based company that manages fishing activities by the Miawpukek Band, is receiving C$15,342 through the Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Programme to complete energy and efficiency audits of its vessels.
“Energy efficiency research has been a focus of the Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program, as energy efficiency generates cost savings for operators, and can also promote environmental conservation. With this project, the Provincial Government’s investment of more than C$15,000 has the potential to help Netukulimk Fisheries Limited reduce its fuel costs, and also reduce the carbon footprint of its operations,” said Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Audits of the vessels will be completed by TriNav, a firm headquartered in St. John’s that has carried out 50 audits of vessels in the Atlantic provinces and the United States.
“I am very pleased to see Netukulimk Fisheries Limited pursuing greater returns from its fishing activities by pursuing this energy efficiency research. I wish the company all the best with this project, and look forward to seeing results that benefit the Miawpukek Band,” said Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune.
The information collected will be compiled into a comprehensive report for each vessel that provides recommendations on how to improve overall operational efficiency and energy use.
“Fuel is a significant cost driver for fish harvesters, and so achieving greater energy efficiency when using our vessels has the potential to create benefits for everyone who has a stake in our fishing activity. On behalf of Netukulimk Fisheries Limited, I would like to thank the Provincial Government for its support as we pursue this project,” said Shayne McDonald, Executive Director, Netukulimk Fisheries Ltd.
