Ocean Harvest Counteracts Decline in Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Farmed Salmon28 January 2014
IRELAND - Ocean Harvest has developed a seaweed based salmon feed that can improve salmon's immune system and boost the amount of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which are important for our heart and mental health.
However, the levels of omega-3 in farmed salmon are steadily declining. This is due to the fact that omega-3 fish oils in the fish diet have been replaced by a variety of cheaper plant oils, which are lower in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
As a result, the quality and taste of the fish have markedly been affected while in parallel compromising the immune system of the fish.
A recent study by the Ocean Harvest Technology research facility shows that Oceanfeed (a formulation of 10 species of seaweed or macro-algae) may offer a solution to counteract the effects of omega-6 rich plant oils.
Salmon that were fed an industrial standard diet containing 12 per cent Oceanfeed, were found to contain 62 per cent more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids than salmon on a similar diet that did not include seaweed.
Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids together with several other components from the seaweeds used in Oceanfeed form the building blocks for the immune-system and can boost the fish's response against all kinds of infections and external parasites, such as sea lice.
These results show that seaweed is an interesting feed additive when it comes to improving quality and health of farmed salmon.
