Government, Industry Analyse Current Situation of Fisheries/Aquaculture Sector

25 February 2014

ECUADOR - The Minister of Foreign Trade, Francisco Rivadeneira, held a dialogue with representatives of fishing associations, exporters and fisheries managers from various sectors to analyse the current situation of the sector and strengthen the markets.

The Minister noted that dialogue is working on adding value to resources, as it gives greater ability to penetrate the consumer market, meaning more revenue and income for the country.

The Minister also reported that he has asked for help in accessing markets without the payment of duties, including the European Union (EU). "This is a key sector of the Ecuadorian fishing market. We hope to continue entering the European market without tariffs and remain competitive," he said.

Similarly, the Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Guillermo Moran, recalled that last year fisheries and aquaculture exceeded expectations.

He added that this year there are good expectations for shrimp and tuna. "The private sector and state institutions have worked on foreign trade to strengthen the distribution and expansion of markets in this successful chain."

The fishing sector exported, in the period January to November 2006-2013, 17 per cent more, from 276,000 tons in 2006 to 428,000 tons in 2013.
