According to the FAO, total seafood production in Turkey reached 623,192 tonnes. While 25 per cent only is represented by aquaculture, farmed seafood production has grown each year approximately 20 per cent in the past decade.

“The agreement with Friend of the Sea,” said President Niyazi Onen “confirms DESAD’s mission to promote sustainable production as well as companies and consumers environmental awareness.”

“Considering the growing global relevance of Turkey in food and seafood production,” explains Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea, “we deem the official engagement to sustainable practices of the major seafood companies in the country to be extremely relevant. We believe that Friend of the Sea certification will help motivating also other companies in this direction.”
