Mexico Announces Shrimp Fishing Bans

MEXICO - The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) has established a temporary closure of fishing for shrimp in federal waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Post SAGARPA 2014 calendar shrimp closures in the Pacific Ocean

This prohibition includes capturing in the Gulf of California, estuarine marshes and in the bays of Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima.

The closure aims to protect shrimp during their the reproductive cycle and in the long term, ensures fishermen have a permanent source of employment.

The areas and dates for the closure are as follows:

a) In the marine waters of the Pacific coast, from the border with the United States, including the Gulf of California to the southern boundary of the state of Nayarit and in the waters of the lagoon systems estuarine marshes and bays of Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit, from 20:00 hours on March 10, 2014.

b) In marine waters from the border between the states of Nayarit and Jalisco, as well as in the state of Colima estuarine lagoon systems, from 00:00 hours on March 13, with the exception of the provision of marine waters federal jurisdiction of the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

c) In marine federal waters of the Gulf of Tehuantepec from 00:00 hours on March 28.

SAGARPA will announce in advance, the dates of completion of the closure through the INAPESCA by agreement to publish in the Official Gazette.
