SAGARPA Applies Management Plan for Sustainable Use of Spiny Lobster

MEXICO - The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) launched a Fishery Management Plan for Spiny Lobster in the Yucatan Peninsula, which will contribute to the sustainable use and conservation of this fishery.

The measure will generate direct benefits to more than 500,000 fishing families in 18 communities in this region, whose main activity is fishing for this crustacean.

As part of this Management Plan, the lobster habitat preference will be considered and studies on the impact of the fishery for this species on other populations of fish, crustaceans and molluscs that occur in the region will also be studied.

The possibility of the semi-culture or culture of lobsters will also be explored.
