FAO Recognises Mexico's Work to Boost Seafood Sustainability and Reduce Bycatch

MEXICO - The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has recognised the actions applied to boost Mexico's seafood sustainability and reduce bycatch, which has managed to reduce the discarding of non-target species, said the FAO representative in Mexico, Nuria Fernández Urquía.

This was stated to inaugurate the work of the national consultation meeting on the project "Management of bycatch of trawl fisheries in Latin America and the Caribbean".

The FAO established a Code of Conduct for best fishing practices and gave Mexico an award for its actions in the development of this activity to limit unwanted catch.

For years researchers from INAPESCA have worked on the design of new types of fishing gear, nets and gates which prevent bycatch.
