Tilapia Foundation to Hold Workshop on Hatchery Management and Breeding

BANGLADESH - The Bangladesh Tilapia Foundation (BTF) is holding a week long workshop 'Tilapia Hatchery Management, Genetically Improved Breeding Stock Development and Quality Seed Production'.

The course will include a three to four hour lecture each day followed by two to three hours hands on practice at the nearby highly facilitated private tilapia hatchery and Tilapia Breeding Nucleus (BTN), along with a visit to the labs and tilapia breeding and genetic research facilities of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI).

The course will cover all the basic and fundamental elements (both theoretical and practical) of tilapia hatchery design, development, and operation for quality seed production (both mono-sex and mixed sex fry) including most practical and simple genetic management techniques for high quality breeding stock development.

The course will be useful for tilapia hatchery technicians, hatchery managers, breeders, researchers and entrepreneurs of all the global regions like South East Asia, Middle East, Africa, Caribbean and South America. Highly qualified resource persons in the field of the tilapia subjects will be available for the lectures (both theoretical and practical) in this course.

The workshop will be held in either the second or third week of June, 2014 at the Bangladesh Tilapia Foundation Office, Mymensingh 2200, Bangladesh.

Lecture topics/hands on practices

1. Advancement of tilapia breeding and aquaculture farming in Asia, Africa and rest of the world;
2. Importance and potentials of different strains of tilapia in aquaculture farming;
3. Taxonomic classification; life cycle; breeding and reproductive biology of tilapia;
4. Basics on breeding and genetics of commercial tilapia species;
5. Techniques for mixed sex tilapia seed production in ponds, hapas, tanks and rice fields;
6. Techniques for monosex all male tilapia seed production in the hatcheries;
7. Tilapia hatchery design, layout, construction and operation for commercial seed production;
8. Brood stock replacement and breeding plans for tilapia hatchery stocks
9. Genetic management techniques for improved quality brooding stock development;
10.Tilapia brood stock and seed handling, packing and transportation;
11. Water quality management in the hatcheries and nurseries;
12. Health management of tilapia brood fish and fry/fingerlings;
13. Tilapia seed value chain and marketing;
14. Technical and business plan development for high quality brooding stock development and seed production.
