Taiwan Eyes Regional Aquaculture Hub Status

05 June 2014

TAIWAN - A soon-to-open production and marketing center will boost the regional profile of Taiwan aquaculture and act as a transshipment center for exports from abroad, according to the ROC Council of Agriculture.

Based at Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park, the 5.5-hectare center is set to start trial operations June 20. It is the world’s first aquaculture production and marketing center to feature a seamless logistics, research and quarantine process, reports TaiwanToday.

Park official Huang Chin-cheng said after the center’s launch 5 August, it is expected to add NT$1 billion (US$30 million) in production output for Taiwan’s aquarium fish sector by 2017. The export value of this sector stands at NT$1.1 billion

The undertaking also involves relaxing related regulations and introducing new rules governing Taiwan’s Free Economic Pilot Zones, which the park is part of. This allows foreign exports to be transported via Taiwan to third markets.

In addition, the center paves the way for expanded cross-strait business partnerships. A mainland Chinese delegation is scheduled to visit the park in October to discuss a host of key issues such as quarantine procedures before ports on the other side of the strait fully open to Taiwan products.
